If you’ve driven past our old premises in San Miguel de Salinas recently, well this week, you may have noticed that our sign is missing and the doors are closed… Well, there isn’t really anything else to notice in San Miguel now-a-days as it is becoming a bit of a ghost town.

We spent a hectic week clearing out the old dive centre and are now on our way down to the port at Cartagena where we will be able to offer boat dives galore within easy reach of the historic town centre and its wonderful bars and cafes (to keep the members of the family, who don’t like to get wet, amused).

But don’t stress if you are based on the Costa Blanca – we are still in the area (well, we do live here) and will still be meeting people and taking them to the dive sites – we just won’t be meeting in San Miguel. So if you are based in Playa Flamenca, Cabo Roig, Punta Prima, VillaMartin and surrounding areas then let us know when you contact us about dives and we can arrange a convenient meeting spot.

Happy diving everyone and here’s to a bright (and soggy) future.

A few weeks ago we mentioned here about the Torrevieja tourism authority promoting their coasts for diving and snorkelling. As well as the nice little video we posted last time, they also produced a very glossy booklet detailing 6 different dive and snorkelling sites and what you can see there. Thankfully, the forward thinking Turismo Torrevieja have put an electronic version of the booklet online for viewing and downloading – though admittedly they did their best to hide it away :)

But here it is for your viewing pleasure. It is in Spanish, English, French and German and covers sites all along the Torrevieja coast including 5 sites at the north end of the town Cala de la Zorra, Cala de la Higuera, Cala de los Trabajos, Juan Aparicio I and II and Cala Piteras which is at Punta Prima and near to the Playa Flamenca beach and commercial centre, so the family can sit and have a coffee or shop whilst you are getting wet.

Torrevieja has over 14km of coast line which the Torrevieja tourist authority (Turismo Torrevieja) are keen to promote as the ideal location for diving. And why not? Ranging from sandy beaches to rocky outcrops, caves and grottos – there is always something to see just off the coast and always something to do for the non-divers in the town – whether it’s hitting the shops or just having a chill in a sea front cafe.

To highlight the clear waters, varying coastscape (is that a word? It certainly should be :) ) and abundance of sea life they’ve put together a lovely little video – if only they could have gotten someone with a little more, well, charisma to narrate it :)

Anyway, here it is – and yes that is a stringray at 5 mins 30 secs – we have those here as well :)

The SS. Isla de la Gomera was a Spanish cargo steamer built in 1918 by Echevarrieta & Larrinaga of Cadiz. The 51.8 metre long ship sank on the 12 April 1946 in a heavy gale when its cargo of oranges shifted and caused it to list and take on water. It is now lying approximately 2 miles from the Cabo de Palos port at a depth of between 28 and 45 metres and is home to some big conger eels, barracudas and shoals of other smaller species.

The wreck of the Isla de la Gomera is known locally as the Naranjito because of the Spanish habit of naming wrecks based on the cargo they held when they sank.

If you need somewhere to stay, there are some fantastic holiday rentals on offer through our accommodation partner Costa Blanca Rentals. With prices from as a little as €10 per person per night it’s a good value accommodation solution for your group.

Costa Blanca Diving is conveniently located between Alicante and San Javier (Murcia) airports, both of which are served well by the low cost airlines.

We have also partnered up with nearby Casa la Pedrera, The Grand Design House & Outdoor Activity Centre (pictured right) where you can spend any non diving time enjoying their lakeside surroundings, a barbecue, kayaking, quad biking, horse riding or just a cool drink and a book by the pool. A solution too for any non-divers in the group. We can tailor make an itinerary to suit your group.
